testimonials every year describe in glowing words how this one-day program dramatically changes lives for the better.
Challenge Day so inspired me that shortly after I learned about it, I volunteered for one of their day-long programs. I was astounded at how deeply I was affected and how I personally witnessed the lives of so many teenagers being transformed in front of my eyes.
Challenge Day is a one-day program offered in hundreds of high schools every year which opens students to seeing their common humanity in a way that is simply miraculous. It is not uncommon by the end of the day to find rival gang members hugging each other and saying I'm sorry, even with tears in their eyes. Truthout Staff, Truthout: What is the role of the press in relation to impending fascism? If you look at mainstream US media, the overwhelming response appears to be "act normal." In the face of such mendacity, the staff at Truthout felt compelled to speak out in defense of real journalism. Here is a compilation of our reflections on the challenge before us and what we're going to do to take it on.
Alycee Lane, Truthout: Anyone concerned with climate change must commit to dismantling the murderous, nihilistic colonial power matrix against which the Sioux are courageously fighting. We may live in a "postcolonial" era, but the exploitative structures put in place 450 years ago still wield their repressive power.
Mike Ludwig, Truthout: Michigan is seeking to block last week's federal court order to deliver bottled water to Flint residents who have been struggling to get enough clean water from emergency distribution centers. This leaves the elderly and those dependent on an unreliable bus system without access to clean water.
Kali Holloway, AlterNet: Washington State Sen. Doug Ericksen says he is drafting a bill that would allow for felony prosecution of protesters who "intentionally break the law ... by obstructing economic activity." Considering that almost all protest could be defined as getting in the way of business interests, Ericksen's bill is an obvious attack on First Amendment rights.
Nell Abram, Free Speech Radio News: The US is the only major democracy in the world to elect its president by a mechanism other than the popular vote. Previous attempts to do away with the archaic method have repeatedly failed. But a state-level proposal known as the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact is drawing renewed attention.
Amy Goodman and Deena Guzder, Democracy Now!: Donald Trump has repeatedly called Syrian refugees "terrorists," incorrectly accused them of carrying out violent attacks in the United States, and repeatedly said he would end all immigration to the US by people from what he called "terror-prone nations." Syrian refugees in Morocco describe the dire situation they will face if the US and Europe deny them entry.
Rachel Cohn and Angie Liao, Brennan Center for Justice: Alongside commercial ventures, local governments and police are using social media monitoring products to probe posts on sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Google+ and Vine for information on protests and potential "threats."
Jill Richardson, OtherWords: If you give Trump a chance, he'll walk all over you. If you go into any negotiation ready to meet him in the middle, he'll demand it isn't enough, that he must get his way entirely. And he'll strong-arm you to get it.
Ben Jervey, Ensia: A handful of enterprising renewable energy developers are building hybrid solar-wind projects to take advantage of the power-generating strengths of each. In tandem, the two technologies serve as a better replacement for climate-warming fossil fuels than either could alone.
