AN ALIEN'S PERSPECTIVE OR AN ALIEN KISSING UP TO AN ILLEGAL ALIEN PRESIDENT:
While it is true that Hawaii is an incredibly diverse place and that that is a great thing, this reality can also serve to hide Hawaii's colonial past and present. The ideal of American multiculturalism is perhaps better realized in Hawaii than other parts of the United States, but it's still an imposed cultural system which demands either assimilation or cultural and sometimes physical death.
What's closer to the truth is that Hawaiians were colonized against their will and have actively resisted becoming and being American for centuries. The civil rights discourse which seeks to ensure equality within the American legal framework and cultural context doesn't address indigeneity or Hawaiians' right to exist not only as they define themselves but as they've existed for centuries. Hawaiians are not trying to define themselves in the context of American culture but are rather fighting to maintain who they are and have always been under threat of cultural annihilation by assimilation and appropriation.
Despite Hawaii's progressive achievements as it relates to race, native Hawaiians remain veritably landless, their culture is appropriated for commercial gain, their waters are polluted by military, tourist, agribusiness and other implements of colonial America, they have the highest rates of incarceration, highest instances of chronic disease, rampant drug abuse, alcoholism, domestic violence. The reasons for this are complex but can be largely traced to the the fact that Hawaiians are recovering from generations of brainwashing that told them they were inferior, savage, unintelligent, lazy and that they needed to shed their Hawaiianness in order to survive in their own land. The resulting psychic breech is impossible to measure and demands our interest, sympathy, and support.
Aloha spirit is indeed real. Hawaiians truly are a loving, welcoming, and collaborative people, in many cases forgiving the sins of their colonizers as well as the unwitting sins of the millions of tourists who find their way to Hawaiian shores. Americans stand to learn much from them. But Hawaiians also still exist outside of the context of American race and the offensively reductive identity that tourism has crafted for them. They are more than the historical relics selectively shown on tours which serve to relegate Hawaiians to some romantic past in which the noble savage once called this place home. Hawaiians still exist and they are genealogically tied to the land in a way that isn't accounted for in American legal or cultural consciousness. As a result, many also have a real and warranted anger at being made invisible or forced into an identity that they can't relate to--an identity that suits the purposes of colonial society.
It's hard to tell how President Obama feels about this, or if he thinks about it. Punahou, the primary institution that shaped Obama as expressed in this article, was founded by missionaries as a way to teach their children separately from native Hawaiians whom they saw as inferior and barbaric. Historical context is important. President Obama's mother and grandparents, for all their truly admirable and undoubtedly genuine embracing of diversity, are settlers in an American colony taken by force from an internationally recognized independent nation state. Their son/grandson attended a very exclusive private school that was formed to teach the very children that would one day overthrow the Hawaiian government and institute polices that would subjugate the Hawaiian people. Just as the "Big Five," the businesses that were involved in the overthrow, still have legacies today, so does Punahou as it continues to benefit American settlers including Japanese, Chinese and other immigrants to Hawaii who choose to assimilate to Americanism.
More than simply benefiting settler society, multiculturalism in Hawaii has actually tangibly stripped Hawaiians of rights and benefits that the Hawaiian Kingdom leadership and their post-overthrow remnants fought tirelessly to maintain. American civil rights discourse was invoked to force settler access to voting for Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustees, and is continually brought up as it relates to lands set up by the government to benefit the Hawaiian people as they tried to survive.
A multicultural Hawaii is still a settler society and if we are to talk about one we must talk about the other. Ta Nahesi Coates has an interesting article on Obama in the Atlantic related to Obamas influences. Among some of his take-aways from his extended interview with the President is that he experienced blackness differently than many African Americans. I think it's also true that he experienced what it means to live in Hawaii differently than many Hawaiians.
This doesn't make the President wrong, ineffective or less credible To the contrary, we're all only as knowledgeable and dexterous as our experiences and perspectives allow us to be. Even though his experience doesn't tell the whole story of Hawaii, the Presidents ability to exist in multiple worlds, listen intently, and make decisions as best he can for all Americans is an incredible asset that very few if any presidents in our history possessed at his level.~ Geoff Knudsen, December 12, 2016
"What's best in me, and what's best in my message, is consistent with the tradition of Hawaii."
