The protest focus was the U.S. illegal wars of aggression and occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan and the military including vehicles from Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) recently returned from Iraq. Among those present were Kanaka Maoli leaders, Kelii, “Skippy” Ioane, a Vietnam vet, Moanikeala Akaka, Moana Tavares, and Noelani Mason, who together with David Schlesinger and others were broadcasting the protest live on Youthbuiltmedia.com. Also joining the protest was 95 year old Don Swergfegger, a retired methodist minister. About l500 leaflets were distributed to people along the parade route and even some parade participants. The leaflet was entitled “Help Protect Veterans & Public Health.” It warned about the dangers of possible DU contamination of the military vehicles in the Hilo parade. PTA’s commanding officer, Lt. Col. Warline Richardson’s words that there would be no mobile weapon systems on military vehicles in todays’ parade turned out to be false Two command Stryker vehicles at the end of the parade (just in front of the ending firetruck) were preceded by several Humvees armed with machine guns. It’s interesting that the Strykers and Humvees were placed at the end of the parade, even though we stated clearly we had no intent of blocking such vehicles. The military obviously did not believe us. They made sure that if we attempted to block the Strykers it would only block them and not the rest of the parade. It should also be noted that members of a right wing citizen group called “The Eagles” were walking as escorts for the Strykers and there were several Hawaii County police on bicycles also acting as a security escort for the Strykers. The Strykers and Humvees, recently returned from Iraq, are currently training at the PTA in the center of our island home that is officially acknowledged to be contaminated with DU. Hawaii’s Stryker brigade is training for redeployment to either Iraq or Afghanistan. These vehicles participated in the Hilo parade in violation of Army Regulation 700-48 according to Doug Rokke, PH.D. Major, retired U.S. Army, and Director U.S. Army Depleted Uranium (DU) Project. Rokke says: “Any and all combat vehicles and equipment (everything) returned from Iraq should be prohibited from any civilian area. (including this parade) A standard wash rack is useless for decontamination… Army regulation 700-48, section 2-4 requires isolation from all human contact. Even after extensive depot level cleaning I found DU, and other radiological, chemical and biological contamination in vehicles years later. The gross contamination of equipment, vehicles, terrain, air, water, soil and food is reflected in, and verified by the hundreds of thousands of US casualties with serious medical problems that are unrelated to bullets or bombs, but are directly related to all of these toxic exposures. Hawaii’s isolated and pristine environment should not be exposed to, and consequently placed in danger through, any exposure to any of the contaminants brought back by the US military from war zones.” All in all, the day of leafleting and protest went very well. There was minimal hostility. The leaflet was crafted to focus on protecting Veterans and Public Health. Who can be against that? We had a very good location for the protest and even many of the vets in the parade gave positive thumbs up signals to many of our signs such as: “No War Surge,” “Protect the Troops from DU,” “Aloha Means Peace,” “Stop the Wars,” and “End Occupations.” Clearly the current wars are not popular even at a veterans parade. As a recognized member since 1843 of the Family of Nation, as was the United States, a ruse created by the U.S. officials was set to destabilize, invade and occupy this friendly, neutral island kingdom. It set a precedent violating international laws and ratified treaties both countries had with each other. The U.S. used the WASP racist doctrines of Manifest Destiny to validate their sneak attack on a non-white Christian country which they considered inferior to them and an essential possession to guard its Western borders 2,300 miles away. Hawaii was considered an expendable country ideally situated for a coaling station to advance its naval power within the Pacific. Smoke and mirrors were set in motion to accomplish this covetous plot. A U.S. Provisional Government was instantly propped up with the protection of the U.S. Navy; the Queen’s first formal protest induced President Cleveland to withdraw the first treaty of annexation to investigate U.S. involvement; the Turpie Resolution of 1894 set a hands-off policy after-the-fact so U.S. officials and other nations could not intercede on the citizens behalf; the conspirators renamed the government, republic of Hawaii in 1894. The Queen’s second Formal Protest and the Memorial along with the overwhelming subjects’ Ku’e Petitions of 1897 against annexation caused the U.S. Congress to reject the second treaty submitted by the treasonous cowards. To counter the failure, the oligarchy motivated Congress to pass the unlawful Newlands joint-resolution to annex Hawai’i inspite of the people’s protests, thus there is no treaty and subsequently no annexation; hence, Hawaii is proclaimed a U.S. territory and the people were told they were now U.S. Citizens, in spite of their protests. The voting process was irregular with no international oversight and the choice was to remain a territory (taxation without representation) or statehood. To vote, one had to be a U.S. citizen. All that met the residency requirements, including military and their dependents, were allowed to vote. Of the eligible voters, 35% voted, and 96% of them chose statehood. The U.S. told the UN that the people voted for statehood. Contrary to Mark Niesse’s collusive statements, many native Hawaiians believe the process further perpetuates the U.S. Manifest Destiny racist doctrines and actions since the unlawful occupation and will not right the wrongs maintained by the U.S.A. While state-appointed Clyde Namuo, CEO of the Office of Hawaiians Affairs, a state-funded agency with trustees elected by all registered voters in the state, adds to the spin that the Akaka Bill is better than nothing as the U.S. will never give up Hawaii and return it to its rightful owners. Contentiously, Namuo, refuses to acknowledge that the Native Hawaiian Reorganized Governing Entity does not correct the injustice; but continues the mockery of justice, freedom, and democracy with self-contradictory language. The Akaka Bill attempts to exclude other bona fide non-nativeHawaiian subjects while usurping the jurisdiction and authority of the Hawaiian Kingdom’s governance to relegate native Hawaiians to a tribal status with restricted control over their destiny subject to Congress’ self-appointed plenary authority. Niesse cites a Hawaiian suffering from the Stockholme Syndrome like some native Hawaiians saying, “It’s been far too long for the Hawaiian people to be suffering. Whatever Hawaiians can get, get it and be grateful.” Errantly, Jamie Story, president of the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, said, “It is not the role of government to try and make up for past wrongs.” She doesn’t take into account the U.S. violation of the laws of occupation, laws of neutrality, and the U.S. Constitution which states that treaties are the Supreme Law of the Land of which the U.S. has with the Kingdom of Hawai’i. Supporters mistakenly view the Bill as a way to provide reconciliation as prompted by the 1993 Apology Bill which a few senators like Senator Gorton correctly perceived that the logical consequence is total independence. “They hope Native Hawaiians could eventually get … full-time jobs that would include teaching hula or Hawaiian language if the bill passes.” How patronizing when in fact that is already ongoing. As for Danner, vice-president of the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, she certainly doesn’t know our communities and know what will work. She is more familiar with Native American and Native Alaskan tribes secured under the U.S. Manifest Destiny. . About $338 million is held in trust for Native Hawaiians by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. So why is the Akaka Bill necessary? University of Hawaii law professor Jon Van Dyke, speaks as a U.S. lawyer within the U.S. box and I doubt his knowledge extends to international law which should be applied; other than that, his assessment is vacuous. Kaulana Park, chairman of the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, runs into the same dilemma with concepts girded within the U.S. box and ingrained with the brainwash. Once again Namuo does his projectory spin that majority of native Hawaiians favor this disingenuous process of federal recognition, when in truth, it’s quite the opposite. The supporters are persons with special interests and the native Hawaiian organizations’ leaders are wooed into supporting it without total support from their members and without much support from the native Hawaiians that are the majority not involved with the organizations. Many are demanding hearings on all the islands to voice their concerns; to date the senators, representatives, and selected supporters adamently refuse to have them. This also means that the native Hawaiians have not been consulted but dictated to what will be for them. It is opposed by pro-independence groups who want the Hawaiian kingdom restored as stated under international laws, facts,and documents that reveal the crime. This is one group that has been ignored, barred from hearings in Washington, D.C., and summarily dismissed in the process. This leaves the Bill uncontested by Hawaii nationals. Kau Inoa is a deceitful registry spurred by deceit and fraud. It was told that it had nothing to do with the support of the Akaka Bill nor a tool to establish in association with a Native Hawaiian government entity. We were told it was a census for the benefits afforded to the beneficiuaries of the programs sponsored by OHA. Daniel Rubinoff and Patrick Schmitz observed larvae from the endemic moth genus Hyposmocoma surviving for weeks in fast moving streams across the Hawaiian archipelago – without coming up for air. Rubinoff and Schmitz say that at least 12 out of 400 species in the genus have the ability to live underwater or on dry land during the insect’s larval stage. We think that’s pretty cool, but their research uncovered something else. The truly remarkable part of this story is that in the last 6 million years the moths have independently evolved the amphibious trait in three separate lineages. Scientific American explains: After genetic sequencing of 2,243 base pairs from 216 individuals in 89 species and 12 lineages, the two researchers…found that the three lines of amphibious species were separated by fully terrestrial lineages, which means that these aquatic capabilities evolved three distinct times or, conversely, that several of the other, terrestrial lineages lost the abilities independently. “Either scenario is remarkable,” noted the study authors. It would “represent the repeated acquisition or loss of a truly amphibious lifestyle not recorded anywhere else” in the insect world–and possibly elsewhere in the animal kingdom. The researchers believe that the caterpillars get the oxygen they need from the highly oxygenated water of the fast moving streams where they live through specialized skin on their abdomen. This theory is backed up by the fact that the caterpillars quickly drown in stagnant water. The new discovery also reaffirms the importance of islands in our study and understanding of evolution. It does add up and, better yet, it doesn’t cost you a cent.] He donned a leather bomber’s jacket with an Air Force One logo on it, got up in front of a boisterous crowd of about 2,000 military personnel in a hangar at Bagram Air Base, and gave a tub-thumping, “support the troops” campaign speech . I’m talking about Barack Obama on his six-hour visit to “Afghanistan.” Of course, any presidential trip to “the front” is always essentially a domestic political phenomenon destined to trump all other news and be covered uncritically. In this case, it was undoubtedly part of the post-health-care run-up to election 2010, emphasizing an area — the Afghan War — in which Americans are, at the moment, remarkably supportive of the president’s policies. Starting with that bomber’s jacket , the event had a certain eerie similarity to George W. Bush’s visits to Iraq. As Bush once swore that we would never step down until the Iraqis had stepped up, so Obama declared his war to be “absolutely essential.” General Mohammad Zahir Azimi, a spokesman for the Afghan Defense Ministry, even claimed that the president had used the long-absent (but patented) Bush word “victory” in his meeting with Hamid Karzai. Above all, whatever the talk about beginning to draw down his surge troops in mid-2011 — and he has so far committed more than 50,000 American troops to that country — when it comes to the Afghan War, the president seemed to signal that we are still on Pentagon time . Particularly striking was his assurance that, while there would be “difficult days ahead… we also know this: The United States of America does not quit once it starts on something… [T]he American armed services does not quit, we keep at it, we persevere, and together with our partners we will prevail. I am absolutely confident of that.” He assured his listeners, and assumedly Americans at home, that we will “finish the job” (however undefined), and made another promise as well: “I’m looking forward,” he told the troops, “to returning to Afghanistan many times in the years to come.” Many times in the years to come. Think about that and fasten your seatbelt. The U.S. evidently isn’t about to leave Afghanistan anytime soon. The president seems to have set his watch to the Pentagon’s clock, which means that, in terrible financial times, he is going to continue investing staggering sums of our money long-term in a perilous war in a distant land with terrible supply lines and no infrastructure. This represents a perfect Paul-Kennedy-style working definition of “imperial overstretch.” Contrast this with the China-on-the-move that Michael Klare, TomDispatch regular and author of Rising Powers, Shrinking Planet , describes below. This Was The Most Progressive Legislative Session In A Long Time
Banning coral-damaging sunscreen chemicals. Building “safe zones” for the homeless. Expanding medical marijuana use for qualified patients. Prohibiting sexual-orientation “conversion” therapy. Banning the use of chlorpyrifos in pesticides. Passing medical aid in dying.
These are just a few examples of the numerous progressive results of the 2018 legislative session. But what made the difference in 2018 — an election year, when conventional wisdom suggests lawmakers facing voters would play it safe?

Legislature Approves Bill To Protect Against Sex-Based Discrimination
House Bill 1489, which would expand protections for students discriminated against on the basis of sex, gender identity or sexual orientation, is headed for Governor Ige’s desk for his signature.
The bill is basically the state version of Title IX — the federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in federally funded education programs.
State Sen. Jill Tokuda called it “a huge step for Hawaii.”
“The bill has gone largely unnoticed this session. People haven’t really realized what we’ve done, but this is going to go very far in terms of protecting our kids,” she said.

Chinatown Sidewalk Extensions Please Some But Infuriate Others
“Bulb-out” sidewalk extensions were installed in Chinatown last summer, but they’re still causing discord among business owners in the area.
The extensions were created to improve pedestrian safety, but some businesses say they confuse drivers, make curbside deliveries difficult and are an eyesore.
People are split on whether they’re a good thing for Chinatown, but it looks like naysayers won’t have to worry about more popping up anytime soon. A City Council committee just passed a bill that would prohibit any more extensions.
