Photo Courtesy: John Evans Hello Bears Ears Supporter -- Since the Fremont Age, Ancestral Puebloan People have planted traditional cultural foods – corn, squash, beans, potatoes and other fresh foods. Some of these foods were first cultivated in Bears Ears thousands of years ago, as evidenced by the Four Corners potato research. During the pinnacle of when Puebloan civilizations lived in Utah, horticulture, cross breeding and hybridization of crops for farming and harvest, were experimentally perfected for drought and pest resistance. As the ancestral Pueblo people migrated south and southeast, complex granaries and farmlands were built within, and near the structures of the Pueblo houses, kivas, and altars. These agrarian ancestors of the Hopi, Zuni, and other Pueblos studied constellations and developed traditional star maps and marked the different seasonal solstices, so that they could accurately anticipate and predict the planting seasons in the spring, the harvest in the fall, and prepare for the monsoon seasons in July. Farming and the agrarian way of life are still very active and form the foundation of living in modern day Pueblo life. The resolve, diligence of plowing, seeding, planting and harvest inform the language, culture, and authenticity of these communities in Arizona and New Mexico. What we are learning about these modern crops of Pueblo Natives, is in some cases they had their origins and were perfected in and around Bears Ears National Monument.  Little rain, where are our wild foods? Along with planting cultural foods, Ute and Diné families rely on a natural calendar, like birds or other wildlife migrating back from the south, as signs to begin harvesting wild foods. These wilds foods are found in canyon bottoms or in the high country of our lands. In specific areas of these lands, we care for and gather wild celery, desert tea, onions, rhubarb, berries and other plants, as well as herbs used for ceremonies. But, this year, many of these precious plants have yet to appear. Elders are saying the dry fall and winter has resulted in the sparsest bounty they have ever seen. Collectively, we are all praying for the late spring rains to arrive to end the drought and provide the nourishment for these cherished herbs and wild foods.   Photo Courtesy: Blake McCord Questions From the Grassroots At the hogan-level, Woody Lee is busy working with Diné (Navajo) communities in Utah. He engages with all seven Utah Navajo Chapter governments to provide Bears Ears updates, announce upcoming events, and invite public comments to planning processes. Woody also encourages Diné citizens to deepen their connections to Bears Ears by hiking, harvesting medicinal plants, and praying for its protection. “Some people have expressed their concern about traveling to Bears Ears due to all the litigation,” Lee said, while reporting from his home. “They fear we will be denied the practicing of our traditions due to the uncertainty.” People need not be concerned.  Even while the litigation is pending, they still can access Bears Ears cultural resources with no problem. One difference is that when protections are restored, mining companies will no longer be able to lease and develop these lands for profit. Cultural access was written into the protection of this landscape by President Obama. Tribes vs Trump Photo Courtesy: Alisha Anderson San Juan County moved to intervene last week in Hopi Tribe vs. Trump, the lawsuit to restore Bears Ears National Monument. The county is arguing that it will be economically harmed if protections ARE restored because “(t)he area in and around Bears Ears is rich in oil, gas, coal, and uranium deposits.” Through this action, San Juan County is opposing its own Native American citizens who voted nearly unanimously last Fall at six Utah Chapter House meetings to maintain the 1.35 million acres of protection and prioritization of cultural access. We are simply asking San Juan County and the Utah delegation to listen to and give our economic vision for our shared future a chance. Bears Ears – A Model for Sustainable Development in Utah Small business owner Persephonie Black relies on juniper seeds, a cultural resource found inside Bears Ears National Monument, to support her livelihood. Her small operation is artsy, and is also built upon her traditional Diné culture. She makes ghost beads – as earrings, wristlets and/or necklaces.  “We get our juniper seeds from Bears Ears,” Black said, explaining that the seed beads are usually found in the undergrowth of a juniper tree. Utah Diné Bikéyah is emphasizing the importance of building a local economy with a foundation on authentic Utah culture. UDB has obtained a “creative placemaking” grant through the ArtPlace Foundation that is in the process of generating community-driven planning recommendations to submit to federal, state, and local planning agencies. Native Americans, like Black, view heritage tourism as a much more sustainable option than the boom and bust development of oil, gas and uranium industries. Bears Ears at Dartmouth On May 4-5, 2018, Utah Diné Bikéyah's Cultural Resources Coordinator Angelo Baca and volunteer Tara Benally presented their views on Bears Ears at the two-day conference entitled, "Protecting the Bears Ears National Monument: Tribal, Political, and Social Narratives of Bears Ears," hosted by the American Science and Engineering Society at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. They were joined by Navajo Nation Attorney General Ethel Branch and former Inter-Tribal Coalition Co-Chair Regina Lopez-Whiteskunk, and each made presentations on topics ranging from conservation and preservation of national monuments and parks to Indigenous perspectives on collaborative and co-management of land with Indigenous communities and tribes.
