Queen Liliuokalani returned to Washington, D.C. in 1897 while U.S. President Cleveland was still in office.

U.S. President Cleveland returned Hawaii back to Queen Liliuokalani in 1893, 1894, and 1897.

She did not receive compensation from the Crown Lands revenue and went to inquire about it.

Minister Willis had delivered the messages from U.S. President Cleveland and returned Hawaii to Queen Liliuokalani in 1893, 1894.

Minister Willis was in Hawaii in 1897 and died shortly after delivering another message returning Hawaii to Queen Liliuokalani.

Queen Liliuokalani was in Washington when she found out that Minister Willis had died.

Minister Willis died on January 6, 1897 after Queen Liliuokalani had left for Washington, D.C.

1897 - January 6.  Announcement in the newspapers document that Queen Liliuokalani arrived in San Francisco on January 6.  ...the same day that Minister Willis died in Honolulu:

"Willis served as Minister to Hawaii until his death in Honolulu on January 6, 1897. An elaborate state funeral was held for him in the ʻIolani Palace (temporarily renamed the Executive Building).[5] He was interred in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky. "

 note:  Queen Liliuokalani arrived in San Francisco on January 6, 1897.  She continued on to Washington, D.Cresearch incomplete as to when she left the islands to go to Washingrton, D.C.  

Minister Willis died on Jan. 6, 1897

Queen Liliuokalani was in Washington, D.C. on January 24, 1897 and was planning to stay until McKinley was sworn in.

The above article shows that Queen Liliuokalani went to visit U.S. President Cleveland before the inauguration of U.S. President William McKinley; Minister Willis had died in Honolulu; and she was there to secure "a large pension" from the United States.
