Hauoli La Hanau e Kapiolani! It is on this day in 1834 that Kapiolani was born. Very much concerned with the health and well being of the Hawaiian people, Kapiolani spearheaded various projects for the sick and destitute. She was a benevolent woman who kept her people in mind. Her selfless actions helped to start Kapiolani Maternity Home, now known as Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children. The Queen also helped those with Hansen’s disease, or leprosy, by providing aid to those at the Kalaupapa settlement on Molokai.
A woman of the people, the Queen was held in high esteem by many and was celebrated by all. For her 52nd birthday, the Queen was celebrated on the Palace grounds. The Royal Hawaiian Band was in attendance and played music for Her Majesty. The King’s Own (Infantry), under the command of Captain Clark, was appointed as the guard of honor on this day. The Naha Society presented the Queen with a congratulatory address and presented her with the Grand Cross of the Royal Order of Kamehameha set in diamonds. It was a momentous day for the Queen as she was celebrated by many.
On this day, we celebrate the life and legacy of Queen Kapiolani.

Amelia Gora Queen Kapiolani was the hanai daughter of Kaluakini my great grandfather.,...he was also married to Haili the daughter of Queen Kapiolani's sister Princess Poomaikelani.....both Kaluakini and Haili were in Kalaupapa. Princess Poomaikelani was one of thed heirs of Kaunuohua and held interest in the Kalaupapa Ahupuaa...... Queen Kapiolani did have a child with her first husband and adopted Kahanu (k). She was also the stepmother of Kamaka (w), Kaopu (k) et. als. Queen Kapiolani is on record opposing the Kawananakoa and Kuhio and took them to court because they failed to listen to her instructions to file the deed to her lands .... the overthrow courts sided with the conspiring nephews, who were cousins of my great grandmother...... the case happened after the dethronement of Queen Liliuokalani.

Aloha! Mahalo nui ke Akua and the Universe. So, I went and bought a new 2- quart crockpot on Tuesday and needed to try it out, right? Was ono for some corn chowder so I made some. Started cooking onions and ham shank in some chicken stock last night. Added the potatoes and corn this morning and when I got home from an errand, I added the evaporated milk. I usually add bacon and celery but didn't do it this time. The rice is cooked. Before I have my meal, I will thicken the corn chowder. I have been eating my main meal around lunch instead of at dinner. I tasted a little and must say that the bugga stay ono! Getting ready to grind. Sending fondest love and aloha to my ohana & hoaloha. Living in gratitude! Love you all.

I'm 57 today and on this birthday, I want to thank my mother - she did all the work, I was just there for the ride. I miss her. I told my kids, on their birthdays, "What shall we do? What did you get me?" LOL. My birthday is a reminder to me that God placed me into this world via a beautiful woman who sacrificed a lot for me.
I am grateful, and if she were here, I'd take HER out to dinner.

Amelia Gora I used to visit my Mom and Dad on my birthday and tell THEM "Happy Birthday!" and explained to them that if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be here!.....they used to laugh because i'm the only one out of the many kids (includes our hanai brother who was a first cousin) who ever told them that.... made for a good laugh and the genuine truth that they were loved  Happy Birthday Maria Taylor ... thank you for making me smile and enjoying memories of my folks... aloha.
