Vol VII No. 725 Part A - More on Bernice Pauahi Bishop, and our Royal Families

Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, born December 19th, 1831, died on October 16, 1884 of breast cancer.
She is described by Kamehameha Schools (founded by her will after her death) as; "last royal descendant of the Kamehameha line". Bernice was the granddaughter of Pauli Kaōleiokū who was the natural born son of Kānekapōlei and the supreme monarch of the Island of Hawaii at the time of Captain Cooks arrival, Kalaniʻōpuʻu. Kaōleiokū was mentioned by Cooks crew as one of the kings children from his favorite wife named Kānekapōlei.
During the unification wars of the islands, Pauli Kaōleiokū and his older brother, Keōua Kūʻahuʻula were the last surviving sons of Kalaniʻōpuʻu. Kamehameha had challenged and defeated Kīwalaʻō (Kalaniʻōpuʻu's first born son with his highest ranking wife, Kalola Pupuka). In order to bring the bloodshed to a close Kamehameha tricked Keōua (who was named after Kamehameha's father Keōua) into meeting with him under the guise of peace. He had, in fact, ordered his brother to spear Keōua when he landed his canoe on the beach, which he did, killing everyone onboard the outrigger canoe. It is said that Keōua purposely took the lead canoe which was not protocol, knowing he was going to his death. This act may have actually saved his younger brother Kaōleiokū, who's canoe pulled up shortly after the massacre. Seeing the young boy about to be slain, Kamehameha yelled out an order to stop, saving everyone on board.
Kamehameha took Pauli Kaōleiokū into his court and protection but would eventually be poisoned by the chiefs who feared he would try and overthrow Kamehameha. He died a year before Kamehameha I in 1818.
Pauli Kaōleiokū had several wives and children including marrying (co-habituating with) Kahailiopua Luahine. From this union came Kōnia, the mother of Bernice Pauahi (who was named after Kalanipauahi, another daughter of Pauli Kaōleiokū). My grandmother Annie Maikai Miller (1910-1983) was the daughter of Samuel Kalimahana Kaialiilii Miller and his wife Daisy Amoe Miller (née Ai). Sam was the grandson of Kānekapōlei from her last husband, an Irish mason/bricklayer who was one of the first foreign settlers in Hawaii, became an advisor to Kamehameha and died/poisoned (we think) in 1810 just before Isaac Davis (another foreign advisor) was poisoned. Samuel's wife, Daisy Amoe was the granddaughter of Kilinahe (k) who's grandmother was the sister of Kanaina I, the grandmother of Kahailiopua Luahine.
Phew...if you've kept up this far more power to you. At any rate, the short of that is, Bernice is my second Cousin, twice removed through her mother Kōnia, who it apears to have lived on the same lands as my great, great grandfather Alika Mela, who was the land steward or konohiki for the Maui lands of Pauli Kaōleiokū and Kānekapōlei. Kānekapōlei actually survived her son for many years, She interred him in the great royal tomb on Hawaii island, Hale O Keawe known for holding the bones of monarchs going back to Liloa and his Son Umi (google it, it's interesting). Pauli would be the last one buried there and would be moved within a few years along with the rest of the bodies to Oahu at the command of Kaahumanu who outlawed the Hawaiian religion.
Through my 5th great uncle Kanaina (the brother of my 5x great grandmother - one might think that a rather obscure relationship to mention but this is how we are connected on paper in a formal way) Bernice is something like a 4th cousin twice remove (I know I'm screwing that up) but, was listed as one of the 8 adjudicated heirs of HH Charles Kanaina along with her cousin Ruth and her cousin Kilinahe, his wife and his children (he died during the probate). While Charles Kanaina and his son King Williiam Charles Lunalilo had amassed the largest amount of lands in Hawaii...it was all sold off and the monies paid to the heirs. Some of the heirs like Ruth, Bernice and my ggg grandmother and gg grandmother, would purchase back as much of the land as they could. Between Ruth and Bernice, much of that land was re-purchased and my family built a small estate near what today is Kamehameha Schools from what small amount they could afford as the only money they had came from the inheritance.
At any rate, she was and still is one of the most important figures in Hawaiian history even if her relationship to the Kamehamehas was through hanai adoption and the idea that Kaōleiokū was a son of Kamehameha was foreign invention and one of the main reasons I think much of Hawaiian history is in need of Kanaka input. Even the Hawaiian Historical Society in 1936 was easily able to trace all of the foreign sources began the error or misinformation and determine that Pauli was the natural born son of Kalaniʻōpuʻu. The Native Hawaiian genealogies show she was descended from Kalaniʻōpuʻu, her biography states she was descended from Kalaniʻōpuʻu and I believe her birth chant even demonstrates the same but still...it is not a myth that she was the great granddaughter of Kamehameha I as she was adopted by the daughter of Kamehameha I even if Kīnaʻu changed her mind and returned Bernice to her natural parents when she gave birth to her own daughter.

Mark Miller I am the author of the above post based on the primary sources, Hawaiian genealogies, probate records, The Hawaiian Historical Society (1936), Bernice's biography, her birth chant, ohana documentation - Alexander p. Miller was the only documented marriage of Kānekapōlei because her last children were baptized into the Catholic Church in Maui, the Hawaiian Language Newspapers, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii and many other sources.

Mark Miller Benny Ramos, and of course, none of this is kapu and Bernice never made any claim of being a Kamehameha by birth. Kānekapōlei and Kōnia both stated outright that Pauli's father was Kalaniʻōpuʻu and it is not at all controversial to the associated ohana.

Amelia Gora Kanekapolei's older brother was Mahihelelima who was also part of our Families - Mahihelelima was the father of Nuuanu who married Kanekapolei 2 and had Kikau who married Akahi. Mahihelelima was the kahu of three (3) of the wives of Kamehameha named Kaahumanu, Kaheiheimalie, and Namahana/Piia.

Amelia Gora Cousin of ours also a descendant of Kanekapolei/Kahiwa Kanekapolei who was the ancestor of Kepelino………… Kanekapolei did not marry but was with other men after the divorce of Nuuanu. Am talking about Kanekapolei 2 not the Kanekapolei who was married to Kalaniopuu, Kamehameha, and Kuuku. I question the genealogies coming out of the Bishop Museum.....because much FRAUD is documented...……...have not seen Miller's connection to our Royal Families...…….also btw Kamehameha Schools is sitting on our families lands and they have to respond by tomorrow....the land is under Moses Kekuaiwa who was MURDERED by the Royal School educators....we are Kamehameha I's descendants found in probate showing Kinau (k) who died in 1929, Peapea (k), and Kalanihelemaiiluna (k). Have NOT seen the Miller genealogy in our research...…...Sorry.....everyone will have to show their proofs...…..because there has been much Fraud over time. There are many pirates who have caused pilikia over time documented.

Mark Miller Actually you have seen the Miller genealogy Amelia Gora. I've seen you include the name in your own research on your blog. But you are correct, you have not seen "Miller" in your research because the name was spelled and called; "Mela". You have already acknowledge Alika Mela of Maui as a part of the royal family. He was actually Alika Mela Jr. His father's full name was Alexander P. Miller Sr.. All of Alika Mela's children and line were Kaukaualii and served the ruling ali'i nui. Miller Sr. was simply called "Mela" and he is documented to have built the first Kamehameha Palace in Lahaina for Kaahumanu. The Mahele lists Alika Mela. I love ya cousin but I see no reason to pull on the strings of the suggestion that Kahiwa Kanekapolei was the daughter of Kanekapolei I. I trust your research to have more than enough evidence to respect it and it is also the Parker Genealogy which I greatly respect. But please post freely. I have found you are at least willing to have a discussion.

None of this comes from the Bishop Museum by the way.

Mark Miller Oh and Mela...was an actual pirate in many ways. He seems to have jumped ship (a deserter) from the US Lady Washington in 1794, was a beach comber and a rogue as well as a heavy drinker who was the first to distill alcohol in the islands as he built the first brick ovens for the process. Sooooo yeah...dead on calling Mela a pirate. I'm not offended. I think I can even reference it to a reliable source. Hey, I get what you are saying.

Mark Miller Amelia Gora, for your consideration (I don't demand you check it, just that it is here should you ever wish to consider it).

The Miller line as direct descendants of Kamehameha I.

Kamehameha I cohabitated with Kalolaa-kumukoa

She was his first wahine and she gave birth to his first born, a daughter named Kahiliʻōpua.

Kahiliʻōpua cohabitated with Lalapamanu and the couple had a son, Kamehameha's first grandson named Nohomualani Palila who cohabitated with Moana Wahine.

The above genealogy is from the DeFries Ohana and listed in "Kamehameha's Children Today".

Nohomualani and Moana had several children including Kaleimanokaho'owaha (w) and Kauwa (w). Kauwa wed Eia and had Charles Kana'ina. Kaleimanokaho'owaha (Kaho'owaha II) cohabitated with Kalaipuwaa (k) and had a daughter named Maunakapu (w) who cohabited with Paihewa (k). The couple had a son named Kilinahe (k).

Kilinahe had 3 wives from Christian marriages. His first wife was Wahineole (w), his second wife was Luika (w) and his third wife and widow was Lama (w) (Recorded as Lama Puahi). Kilinahe and Lama had several children including Namakalele (w) who was married to AI.

The above genealogy is from the Hawaiian Kingdom Supreme Court Probate of Charles Kana'ina number 2426 and was confirmed and verified through Kana'ina and Queen Kalama's genealogy books (those actual book might be in the Bishop museum now but the probate, #2426 is available in full online from the Hawaii State Archives.

Namakalele's full name on her death certificate, she married a second time, was Keluapai'na Namakalele Akau. Namakelele had a daughter named Daisy Amoe Ai. Daisy married Samuel Kalimahana Kaialiilii Miller (Mela), the son of Alika Mela.

Samuel's brother went to the Royal School (Yeah, I know how you feel about that) and became a first Lt. in the Queen's OWN for Queen Kapiolani. But that brother was hanai adopted and grew up as John Mahiai Kaneakua (his grave however, does list him as John Mahiai Miller).

The Miller genealogy from Alika is actually known already and has been for many years since Aunty Nona and the Desha/Beamer musical dynasty of which I have no connection to or personally know the Beamer family. I have cousins who's parents were taught by the ohana but I don't want anyone to think I'm name dropping. Their connection is purely genealogical but it would of course be a great honor if we were ever able to meet one day.

Isabella Desha was born Isabella Kalili Haleala Miller, the daughter of Kapuailohia Wahine Mela and Alika Mela. She was the full sister of Samuel and John Miller.

Mark Miller Amelia Gora I should also mention that John Mahiai Miller/Kaneakua became an attorney and was one of Liliuokalani's lawyers who traved to DC with her after the overthrow and was one of the committee of 21 that presented the memorial to Blount from the Hui Hawaiian Aloha ʻĀina.

He's in this pic, bottom rom (very bottom),young man holding gloves with foot touching fur on the image right.

Amelia Gora note: am glad this is not the pic that has a caption"after a hunt for kanaka in the woods"..some kanaka maoli picked that one up...the Archives are hiding this picture...………… interesting because Routhē B Pololei has some of these names in her genealogies...………..also the Beamers et als are claiming that they are Kamehameha's daughter Kapapauai descendants...her mother was Manono ………..these lines are part of Kamehameha's but sadly Manono, sibling of our tutu's ,....had run off with Kekuaokalani who wanted to continue the kapu system......he was opposed ………..which is why both were terminated shortly after Kamehameha died in 1819.....Kekuaokalani was also part of Keliimaikai, Kamehameha's brother...…...and our tutu was also the sibling...because am one of the descendants of Grace Kamaikui whose mother was Kuamoo/Kaonaeha the sister of Kekuaokalani…… funny how we're family of both of them who died......it's very sad that both were resistant to the instructions of Kamehameha...…….If both were not terminated, they would have been the cause of the total destruction of all kanaka maoli in the Hawaiian Islands...…..which is what we learned through oral history. Also, I've spoken with one of your family members named "Nani"...….haven't seen her for a while....she's a retired school teacher and lives in Waikiki...….aloha. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycAfHsLPips
