Chad Kalepa Baybayan holds a Masters in Education degree, is fluent in the Hawaiian language, and is captain and navigator of the Hawaiian deep-sea voyaging can...oes Hōkūle’a, Hawai’iloa, and Hōkūalaka’i. Chad is in support of the Thirty Meter Telescope and said, “astronomy advances human knowledge.”
"I've heard the comment that the protesters want to be on the right side of history. I want to be on the right side of humanity. I want to be on the right side of enlightenment," Baybayan said.
The telescope is expected to allow astronomers to peer back some 13 billion years in time to shortly after the Big Bang. It's expected to help astronomers determine whether life exists on planets outside the solar system and better understand fundamental concepts like gravity. #KnowledgeIsPower
Mayor Harry Kim and I will continue to seek and find a peaceful solution to move this project forward on #MaunaKea.

      First and foremost, it doesn’t matter how big (or small) a project is, it will desecrate a sacred site if it does not comport with those practices associated with reverence for that site.
      I have been seeing an inaccurate image of the so-called footprint of the TMT being used to both minimize the impact of the TMT project, while simultaneously attacking kia‘i who have gathered at Pu‘u Huluhulu.
      So, I employed common sense, some basic math, project facts from TMT docs, truth, and photoshop skillz (with the “Z”) to provide a highly accurate depiction of the 5-acre TMT footprint placed near Pu‘u Huluhulu. I even kept the Google maps measurement for you to fact check me.

      TMT Construction Footprint is 8.5 acres;
      TMT site footprint, which includes the structure and a paved platform around the structure (including parking) is 5 acres.
      TMT is not slated to be developed near Pu‘u Huluhulu, I’ve illustrated the footprint there in response to inaccurate depictions of the TMT footprint placed near the Pu‘u.
