Today, surfers gathered at beaches across the Hawaiian Islands from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. for “He‘e Nalu No Ka Mauna” to protect Mauna Kea. The culmination of events... at Puhi Bay (Hawaiian Village), Hilo; Laniupoko Beach Park, Maui; Mākaha Beach Park, O‘ahu; and Waioli Beach Park (Pinetrees), Kaua‘i was a paddle out ceremony at noon. Attendees of “He‘e Nalu No Ka Mauna” were encouraged to practice Kapu Aloha as well as bring their own surfboards, bodyboards and canoes.
Earlier this month, thousands of surfers across the world lent their voices on social media to raise awareness of the struggle to protect Mauna Kea from the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope. Using the hashtags #SurfersForMaunaKea#MaukaToMakai ocean enthusiasts posted images of themselves supporting the protection of Mauna Kea from all over the world. Their solidarity with the kia‘i (guardians) of Mauna Kea illustrates how the mountain and oceans are all connected. Furthermore, he‘e nalu (surfing) was invented in Hawai‘i therefore the international surf community and Native Hawaiians have a shared cultural ancestry.
Prominent Native Hawaiian surfers like Two-Time World Surf League (WSL) World Longboard Champion Kelia Moniz as well as Championship Tour competitors Seth Moniz and Ezekiel Lau posted their support for the protection of Mauna Kea and their opposition of the Thirty Meter Telescope on Instagram.Two-Time WSL Champion John John Florence and prolific waterman Kai Lenny also joined in the #SurfersForMaunaKea campaign.
In addition to the paddle out ceremonies there were also workshops, hula, cultural protocol and Hawaiian music performances.

As the struggle continues we are seeing the other side put forth our fellow Kanaka - who are pro-TMT - as champions of their cause and as weapons against us, th...e Kiaʻi - The Protectors. It won’t be the first time that they have tried this and it will not be the last. But please, do not try to use our own king, David Kalākaua, as a weapon against us, his own people, and the stand that we take in defense of our beloved ʻĀina. Proponents have made their snide remarks and attempted to educate us of how Kalākaua, too, was a proponent of astronomy. They also pull out his quote, their ace up their sleeve, meant as a dagger for our hearts:
“It will afford me unfeigned satisfaction if my kingdom can add its quota toward the successful accomplishment of the most important astronomical observation of the present century and assist, however humbly, the enlightened nations of the earth in these costly enterprises.”
Sorry, but the telescope that he supported to observe the Venus transit may have been bigger than the ones our dads bought for us as kids but it was not a thirty meter monster that needed to be built upon Mauna Kea. Do you really think the King would have approved? While Kalākaua Rex might have been a proponent of science and modernity, let’s remind them that it was he, our King, who strived to revive our native arts and sciences to show us - his people - as well as the rest of the world, that the knowledge gained by the Hawaiian people was as valid and important as anything else on the planet. Today, as the Honua suffers under the stress of not being loved and cared for properly, we are seeing the value of Indigenous knowledge in keeping our Earth alive.
So, Kalākaua will always be our champion, not theirs. And he will always be the original Hawaiian Renaissance Man. We were reborn in his modern era as a people whose roots reached down to the very foundations of our ʻĀina. Those roots are still there. And We are still here. Aloha ʻĀina!

Yesterday was everything for me and my ‘ohana. My ‘ohana Lindsey is from Waimea/Kohala. Mauna a Wākea has always been at the center.... We hold the names of the wahine noho mauna in our family names. My great great grandfather, William Miller Seymour Lindsey, escorted Queen Emma to the top of the mauna via Mānā. While there she spent time at Waiau. They say Papa was chosen because of all the Waimea paniolo, he knew the mauna the best. For many many generations our ‘ohana has taken the piko of our babies to Lake Waiau, to be held in her safe keeping forever.

Yesterday our ‘ohana returned to Waiau to take my sons piko. Every part of ceremony was intentional and every person involved so key. From the waters of Kahoupouakāne to the leo oli of my dear Aunty Leilani Lindsey Kaapuni, the oli written by my gifted cousin, Manaiakalani Kalua and skillfully executed by my haumāna and the awa so thoughtfully prepared and offered by Kahiau’s Daddy, every piece to honor nā akua. .

As I watched his piko float and be accepted into Waiau’s embrace, I wept with unimaginable joy. Joy as I felt the akua, my kupuna with us, moving with us, breathing with us, joy as this moment was made by the collective of 3 generations of Lindsey’s. Joy as my Mama fought and made the hike like a champ to make sure her mana was present for us. More joy as I listened to Kukini explain to our son that he and the mauna are one, that his piko and those of all of his kupuna are one, that Waiau will mālama him and he is to mālama her all of his days. Daddy told him his pilina to Waiau, Mauna a Wākea and his kūpuna cannot be severed.

As we left the mauna my son cried saying aloha to Mauna Kea and his piko. He cried once more as we saw her fade from our view on the mokulele. He is already asking to return to her. Aole o kana mai ka mahalo a me ke aloha no na kanaka i kokua mai ia makou o kuu ohana me keia kuleana nui. Ke aloha nui!

Inspired by the recent events on Maunakea, some of Hawaiʻi’s beloved musical artists joined their voices to record “Kū Haʻaheo E Kuʻu Hawaiʻi.” Composed by Hinaleimoana Wong, this mele has become a rallying call for our lāhui to ʻonipaʻa and aloha ʻāina.

This morning, Hawaiians tried to access Maunakea as is their right. They were denied but astronomy personnel were let up freely. Discriminatory and selective access to Maunakea by the state. How is any of this legal?
