Dear friends and supporters of the Jeju anti-base struggle,Thanks so much for your sign if you have already done. We are currently having more than 200 signers and will continue to collect the signs until the project is withdrawn. Please see the list of signers including very well known figures in the English petition link.Still, we are hoping to collect first signs by the midnight of Dec. 16th (Korean time). Please read the story at the end of this email. It is a man’s story whose home is in the middle of planned runway and who is currently fasting against the Jeju 2nd airport.
Please sign (If you had not done yet) and spread it to your networks. Beside existing English language petition, Japanese and Chinese language petitions were also recently made. If you can, please spread them, too.English language petition
Chinese language petition
Japanese language petition
And you may also sign to this other petition supported by a Korean group. It is focused on the environment aspect of the Jeju 2nd airport project.
While many details on the Jeju 2nd airport project are provided by both petitions, you may also refer to our latest newsletter for more updates.Thank you!!Sincerely,Gangjeong Village international teamSavejejunow.org============================On Dec. 11th, Kim Kyung-bae, a resident in Nansan-ri, Seongsan, Jeju, started his fast in front of government complex building in Sejong City, main land of Korea. He plans to carry out the fast until Dec. 19, the date of deadline for the Ministry of Environment (MOE) who should give the answer to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT) by the day, regarding the Strategic Environment Impact Assessment on the Jeju 2nd airport. Kim is demanding that MOE should totally disagree with such SEA full of lies and missing. If the MOE give the MOLIT such as ‘conditioned agreement,’ it would be a pretext for the MOLIT to make a public notification on the Basic Plan of the Jeju 2nd airport. It is his 3rd time for Kim to carry our hunger strike in opposition to the Jeju 2nd airport (air force base). He carried out 42 days’ fast in 2017 and 38 days again last winter. The below is a translated excerpt from his facebook post on Dec. 14th.-The fourth day of fast in front of Government complex building in Sejong City-Last night, my mother who will be soon 90year old called me.She was about to cry.“Where are you?”“Yes, I am somewhere.”“Are you OK?”“I am very fine.”“Don’t do it so long and come back home soon.”“Yes, mother, it will not be long. I will be back, soon.”She became to know the news of my fast through news. She must cry again after she hang up her phone as she cried for a long time to see my cast-worn leg as I was greatly hurt during the protest this October.Whenever I am fasting, she can hardly eat. I feel so bad to exploit my body like this since my mother so greatly took care of my frail body when I was a child. She tried to feed me with all the food known to be good for a person with poor health. However, mother!I don’t want to show you my outcry when my dearest home would be forcefully taken off from me for the airport runway. And I don’t want you pass away seeing a horrible sight of having your lifetime beloved house- where you raised six children with great care- dispossessed since your house which is only 200meter from the planned airport is one of the homes to be moved first.I think it would be more unfilial. Therefore, mother, please be strong.(Photo source: Kim Kyung-bae's facebook)
