Queen Liliuokalani returned to Washington, D.C. in 1897 while U.S. President Cleveland was still in office.
U.S. President Cleveland returned Hawaii back to Queen Liliuokalani in 1893, 1894, and 1897.
She did not receive compensation from the Crown Lands revenue and went to inquire about it.
Minister Willis had delivered the messages from U.S. President Cleveland and returned Hawaii to Queen Liliuokalani in 1893, 1894.
Minister Willis was in Hawaii in 1897 and died shortly after delivering another message returning Hawaii to Queen Liliuokalani.
Queen Liliuokalani was in Washington when she found out that Minister Willis had died.

Willis served as Minister to Hawaii until his death in Honolulu on January 6, 1897. An elaborate state funeral was held for him in the ʻIolani Palace (temporarily renamed the Executive Building).[5] He was interred in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky. "
