Hawaii Politics Has Never Been For Sissies By Denby Fawcett

Denby Fawcett: Hawaii Politics Has Never Been For Sissies
Hawaii politics is not — and never has been — for the faint of heart, according to columnist Denby Fawcett.
It has long been a rough playing field, “even as far back as the royal elections of 1874 when Queen Emma ran against David Kalakaua for the right to rule Hawaii,” Fawcett writes.
And as this election season ramps up, “it will be interesting to see how well Hawaii’s candidates stand up to the inevitable personal attacks.”

Vog From Kilauea Increases The Need For Classroom Air Conditioning By Suevon Lee

Vog From Kilauea Increases The Need For Classroom Air Conditioning
School may be out for the summer, but come August 6, many Big Island classrooms may have to deal with the poor air quality caused by Kilauea.
“Even if we did have the windows shut and closed the doors and kept the fans on, we’d still have gas coming into our classrooms,” one teacher said of the final days of school before summer break. “I can only imagine what it would feel like when we go back to school in August and it’s blazing (hot) outside.”
Some say the solution is prioritizing the installation of air conditioning for the schools being impacted.

A Republican Governor Would Bring New Uncertainty To Rail Project By Marcel Honore

If Hawaii elects a Republican governor, the future of rail could look very different.
Top Republican candidates including John Carroll, Andria Tupola and Ray L’Heureux have voiced major concerns about the way rail costs have been managed, but haven’t provided many specifics as to how to move forward.
And while rail is a city project, Hawaii’s governor will likely play a bigger role in coming years now that its completion relies on billions of state tax revenues.

Some Lava Evacuees Allowed Back Into Their Homes During ‘Stable’ Flow By The Associated Press

Some Lava Evacuees Allowed Back Into Their Homes During ‘Stable’ Flow
As Kilauea enters a more “stable” phase, officials are allowing some evacuated Big Island residents to return to their homes.
It’s possible that new activity will emerge, scientists say, but the lava currently flowing into the ocean appears to be on a more predictable path that’s not threatening new areas.

Kilauea Unleashes More Small Blasts, Snaking Lava By The Associated Press

Kilauea Unleashes More Small Blasts, Snaking Lava
Scientists are warning residents on the Big Island that ash expelled from Kilauea could cause poor visibility and bad driving conditions.
They also warn against venturing too close to lava hitting water, saying it could expose people to dangers from flying debris.
