I was told to cleanse in the ocean before going. I cleansed again when I descended.
Upon arrival, do the orientation and non-violence training.
Jump in and kokua where you see a need! There are cleaning supplies by the luas. Help sort opala, cook, or just go around and grab full trash bags. Don’t wait to be asked.
Every morning the Royal Order kane will chant the sun up with e ala e at the ahu around 5:45. It’s worth it to wake up and chant with them.
*If you are planning on hiking up the Puʻu, there are guided tours given twice a day. On Wednesday’s the Puʻu is closed. If you’re interested in joining a tour with one of our kanaka rangers, please check in with the information station located at the front of the Puʻuhonua.
Take as many classes as you can at the Pu’uhuluhulu University. So much valuable knowledge is shared!! Attend all protocols.
Lots of people sleep in their cars to stay warm and not have to pack full camping gear.
Minimize waste! Bring a flask and water jugs. No single use plastic bottles. Bring trash bags and carry them out. Don’t add to the logistical burden for the kia’i who are there for the long haul.
Bring your own non-perishable food. Try to leave the prepared foods for the kia’i who are living there full time.
Don’t underestimate how cold, rainy, hot, windy, or any variation of those elements it will be! Some days I was wearing shorts and the next day I was in my snow parka all day.
The kia’i may need to remain on the mauna for an indefinite time frame. Do your best ease the burden on the community so it can continue to thrive. It is a healing place. You will find a sense of belonging by being an active caretaker of the ‘āina and the kanaka there.
Above all: KAPU ALOHA!
DO NOT:
Just go, eat, make waste, print shirts, take pics for the ‘Gram, and dig out.

"The hydroelectric dams Of KIUC create only 1 to 2% of their power. If they opened up the ability of homeowners to sell excess power to them and stored it in Tesla batteries they could easily produce this power without wasting waters of the People. Because of the 100% diversion of the six streams by KIUC the residents of Lihue who think they are drinking fresh water from the aquifer are actually drinking surface water that is filtered. The water of last alternative. If the water was not diverted it would flow to farms and serve Kalo farmers, in so doing the water would filter through the soil and recharge the aquifer. The aquifer that served Lihue has diminished to the point that at a minimum two drinking water wells have gone dry. This diversion is an old sugar plantation diversion, it has been depleting our aquifers for many years and now we pay the price. KIUC is a cooperative and we as members need to let them know we don’t want to take water away from farmers but want them to invest more into solar energy storage.
The actual end user of the water is Grove Farms as they pipe the water from KIUC to their filtration plant and then sell it back to the Water Dept for approximately 2 million dollars a year by charging them a transporting fee. We then buy it at even a higher rate from the Dept of Water. The Dept of water turned down Hawaiian Homelands, request for water saying they were out of their service area even though they had the water available. If the water was allowed to flow the Hawaiian Homelands would have access to water as it would flow naturally down to them and they could build the homes they have waited way too long to have. (See Oct 26 County Council meeting)"

While greater than 50% of our tested areas were above the STV, there was an overall trend down in the numbers across most of the sites tested.

SURFRIDER SEPT WATER QUALITY TEST RESULTS:
FROM DR JOHN ALDRETE:
In summary:
Seventeen (17) of our 32 tested sites (53%) this month tested above the Statistica...l Threshold Value (STV) of 130 counts/100 mls, while 15 of the sites (47%) were tested below the STV. It is normally here that I have a statement about how all streams and river mouths tested are above the STV, but this month both Waimea River Mouth and Lumahai Stream fell well below the STV threshold (30 and 85, respectively, yay!). All other streams and river mouths did test above the STV of 130.
As always, sites where the geometric mean are in the thousands are badly polluted with fecal indicating bacteria. It is recommended that sites consistently above the STV should be posted with caution signs.
Compared to the same sites tested last month, nearly 50% of the tested sites showed no change in the levels of Enterococcus in the water; most of these sites were well below the STV, with the only exception being Waikomo Stream at Koloa Landing, which remained high in both July and August.
28% of the samples (n=8) tested this weekend trended downward in the Enterococcus counts compared to last month. Of these, 3 were significant (>50% decrease):

Pls support kīa’i for the @protectmaunakea movement. During this time, we are trying to unite both kānaka and Hawai’i born peoples alike to protect not only the... mauna, but also our way of life and greatest natural resources in Hawaii as a whole. We feel that our movement has successfully united all aspects of Hawaiian culture with the exception of our traditional ocean practices - namely surfing, fishing, paddling, etc. This is where you come in. Pls be an inspiration and raise awareness amongst the general public and the corporate realm to promote the conservation of our ‘āina for our generation and future generations to come.

“To be called Namahana —“the gathering place of the chiefs” — the school will serve as many as 350 students who currently must take long round-trip bus or rides to Kapaa for public middle and high school.”
“As the system works now, once children graduate from one of those two elementary schools, they must take a bus or be driven to Kapaa Middle School. For kids who live at the far end of the North Shore zone — Haena and Wainiha — that can mean a two-hour commute in each direction, sometimes on two different buses.”

Here is the enforcement action taken by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture -
“The samples were not taken using standard chain of custody procedures and were not collected using the protocols from the Lehua Restoration Project... But the Lehua restoration team did not have the ice and other necessary supplies to collect samples as specified in their environmental assessment. Diphacinone residues and coloration were found.”
The violation report, over 200 pages in length, included such comments as - failure to notify HDOA pesticides branch of a large fish kill, wind speed not being recorded, the pesticide label not being in possession of the helicopter pilot, and the helicopter pilot not being properly licensed.
The entire violation report, complete with a long list of violations was completed in 2018. The document can be found at the Dropbox link below and was released under a public records request earlier this year.https://www.dropbox.com/home/Lehua%20drop%20enforcement..."

"On March 29, 2018, the Federal Communications Commission gave its approval to SpaceX’s plan to launch an unprecedented 4,425 satellites into low orbit around t...he Earth. And that’s only the beginning. SpaceX has applied to the FCC to increase the number of satellites to 12,000 in order to provide “ultrafast, lag-free Internet” to every square inch of the earth. 5G from space.
the rockets of both SpaceX and OneWeb will burn kerosene. Burning kerosene in space produces prodigious amounts of black soot, which accumulates in the stratosphere. Black carbon absorbs so much solar energy that its contribution to global warming is two million times greater per unit mass than carbon dioxide.
Just 35 launches of SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket per year would produce an amount of warming roughly equal to the amount of warming produced in a year by the world’s ONE BILLION CARS.
if a single half-watt radio station broadcasting from the earth has a measurable effect on the magnetosphere, what effect will 20,000 satellites, some located directly in the ionosphere and some directly in the magnetosphere, each blasting out up to five million watts—what effect will that have on life below?"
