LIVE: NASA Announces Major New Discovery
Great News Everyone! I registered "Imperial Household Gagaku" today at the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs here in Hawai'i so I, now to be known as self-annointed "Sensei Kai-san" can teach anyone this National Japanese Treasured Dance. I have studied it extensively on YouTube over the past year. I'm so excited! 10,000 yen an hour to start. I'm not Japanese but my wife is. (Make sure you read the whole post...or at least the end part)
Gagaku, a fusion of 5th century music and dances, was completed in its artistic form by about the 10th century, from whence it has been passed down from generation to generation under the patronage of the Japanese Imperial Family. Gagaku is performed at several court functions at the Imperial Palace, at State Dinners and on the occasion of the Spring and Autumn Garden Parties. There is also a performance of Gagaku almost once a year at the National Theater of Japan.
In 1955, Gagaku performed by the Court musicians of the Music Department of the Imperial Household was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property. The Court musicians were collectively designated as holders of "Important Intangible Cultural Properties," a designation that is commonly referred to as "living national treasure," and their activities continue to this day to preserve the format of Gagaku that has been passed down through the millennia. In 2009, Gagaku performed by the Music Department of the Imperial Household was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in accordance with the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Gagaku was thus recognized not only in Japan but also internationally as Japan’s traditional culture that should be transmitted over generations and has acquired universal value in terms of both history and art. (Source: The Imperial Household Agency)
SHARING FROM KUMU HULA Kapua Dalire-Moe’s Page:
"To my family, friends, fellow Kumu Hula, and Students throughout Japan. As we begin to walk this new journey in our hula life and welcome a new year, I’m sad and disgusted, but have to admit it came as no surprise to me, that my ex student, who informed me through email that she no longer wanted to belong to halau and wanted to open her own and be independent as they say in Japan, has filed papers to trademark my name Hālau Ka Liko Pua O Kalaniākea in Japan.
She left halau Oct.3, 2017 and filed on Oct. 30,2017. (And it has been confirmed from the licensing office). I cannot find the words to even answer the question “why?” And will not waste living my life trying to even understand. My family name given to me at birth by Aunty Emma Defries will always belong to my family. My children will always be the true heirs to the Kalaniākea name that they all carry as well. Nothing will ever change that. But if she is approved and granted ownership, I WILL NOT give her the satisfaction to claim any association to me, my family, and the legacy of the late Aloha Dalire. Hālau Ka Liko Pua O Kalaniākea will no longer exist under my leadership. I will change my Hālau name and move forward with my family, my students, and my Kuleana to uphold a standard of excellence perpetuating the Hawaiian Culture the way my Kupuna entrusted me to do as a Kumu. She can have the halau name and claim ownership because I know that without me, Kalaniākea is nothing but just a name. I can only pray that she understands the cultural ramifications that will follow a name with so much Mana that wasn’t hers to begin with.
    ‘O wau,
    Kumu Hula Kapua Dalire-Moe
Hālau Ka Liko Pua O Kalaniākea

Paulo Faleafine Jr I've learned from a friend of mine from Japan that hula is about a status not about the spiritual and cultural focus. If you have friends in Hawaii and do Hawaiian things your social status is higher than others. In Japan Hula is a business not a cultural corner stone... At least this is my understanding of what was told to me.

Jeannine Johnson Kumu just needs a good copyright attorney. The DCCA will have a hearing and learn the truth. This is the problem with not having federal recognition. Hawaiians don't have a right to intellectual or other rights, which is how haole have been able to copyright hula poses and Disney our ancient chants. But that is a name she has used for years and so she has a good claim.

Mark Miller !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"Your auntie is Emma Defries! Holy moly! Now I know how we are related!

I am actually a Japanese citizen. My grandfather never renounced his citizenship and was alive when I was born in Japan. My citizenship is by birth because o
f my heritage and not the off chance that I happened to be born there because my father was stationed in Japan. While technically my brother and sister's had the same dual citizenship, but because they were not born there means their citizenship ended when the came of age as US citizens and they did not declare Japanese citizenship by US law. Since I was born there and my father was considered the son of a Japanese citizen my mother was very cautious about documenting my birth. It seems she had an Uncle that had been born in Italy and was also a US citizen had been drafted into the Italian Army during the war. She always worried I would get drafted into the Japanese army but dad just laughed and reminded her Japan doesn't have a standing army.

What a wonderful post to read on many levels!
