¡VIVA PUERTO RICO LIBRE!

Seguidamente me contestó: --Te conozco, sé

aprendí a dibujar.

Ariadna Valle Pasos, recibieron menciones.

metió la mano para salvar esta situación --como siempre ha acostumbrado--;

LONG LIVE FREE PUERTO RICO!

A TRIBUTE TO THE PUERTO RICAN LEADER OSCAR LÓPEZ RIVERA AT THE CASA DEL ALBA
CULTURAL

By Astrid Barnet, with the collaboration of Tricontinental

“We were in the high security prison of the state of Indiana; it was lunch
time and inside a huge dining hall occupied by some 500 people I immediately
recognized Oscar, due to the campaign that existed and still exists for his
liberation, long before the launching of our campaign (Free the Five!). I
approached him and identified myself: “I am Cuban, my name is Fernando
González”. Right away he said, “I know you, I know who you are” (…) We thus
had the possibility – regardless of the adverse circumstances – to support
each other and exchange mutually at some moment during the day on political
and ideological problems, about the circumstances and problems of Cuba and
the United States…  and all kinds of subjects, because this Puerto Rican –
already over seventy years old and a prisoner in U.S. jails for thirty-five
years – has a deep knowledge of the history of Puerto Rico and the United
States.”

Those were the words of the Hero of the Republic of Cuba Fernando González
Llort in the documentary that opened the photo exhibition at the Casa del
ALBA Cultural in Havana and the awarding ceremony of the contest “Freedom
for Oscar López Rivera”, an event convoked by the Organization of Solidarity
of the Peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America (OSPAAAL) and the
International Committee for Peace, Justice and Dignity for the Peoples.

“Oscar leads a life of respect and discipline in prison to everything and
everyone; he does not engage in group dynamics (…) He learned to paint all
by himself using graffiti; he taught me that technique and that was how I
learned to draw. Oscar is a very firm man and is always creating (…) I
shared the prison cell with him for five years and I’m sure we will meet
again one day!” concluded González Llort during the tribute paid to that
Puerto Rican independence leader. Part of the tribute was also an excellent
photographic showcase coordinated by the professional Puerto Rican
photographer Ramón Frontera presenting 79 works by 30 contestants from
different parts of our country.

Three first prizes were awarded to Liliana Duarte, Madelín Ramírez and
Adonis Fleites, all youngsters; the boy Marcos Linares García won the second
prize, while the also young Abel Cotilla, Xiomarilys Nieves Collado and
Ariadna Valle Pasos received mentions. All the prizes were handed out by
Fernando González Llort and another Hero of the Republic of Cuba, Gerardo
Hernández.

Edwin González Vázquez, delegate of the Puerto Rican Mission in Cuba,
declared: “Today in Puerto Rico we face a new board of fiscal control – a
result of the crisis created and accumulated by the colonial government for
more than a decade – and of course, the moment arrived when one couldn’t pay
what was owed because the very economic design does not allow it. This time
there is something significant, and it is that the government of the United
States did not intervene to save this situation, as it usually does;
however, its great multinationals continue obtaining benefits for more than
35 thousand million dollars each year.

In the meantime, in Puerto Rico the executive and legislative powers, the
Supreme Court and Congress itself have declared themselves exhausted. “Said
board of fiscal control is not coming to manage the economic situation; it
also has more power than the colonial government. We are returning
historically to 1898, to the beginning of the U.S. invasion and intervention
in Puerto Rico, as classic colony of a great empire; a country with more
than 3 800,000 inhabitants, while nearly four million live in the United
States, among them many professionals who have migrated during the last ten
years and who, in the end, are the ones supporting the economy. The board,
which is made up by seven members appointed by the president (all U.S.
Americans!) has come to ensure the payment of the shareholders – some 63 000
million debits – and not to solve the economic problem.

“I do have to say that at this very moment popular demonstrations of protest
against this procedure are taking place. In the social networks there are
also denounces of this policy by a movement called “Concertación contra la
Junta” (Coordination against the Board), which brings together not only
independence fighters, but also government officials and public servants.

“With regard to Donald Trump, newly elected president of the United States,
it is known that the policy of the great world power toward Puerto Rico has
always come from the so-called establishment. Therefore, the position of the
present board and the century-old policy of colonial and cultural dominion
will continue in our country, and all the more with a president like Trump.”

“We will continue strengthening our political-ideological campaign of one
hundred thousand signatures for the liberation of independence fighter Oscar
López – 73 years old and imprisoned for the last 35 years in the Indiana
penitentiary – now with the request of pardon to president Obama in this
last stage of his mandate, which expires next January 20. We demand Oscar’s
liberation, and if after January 20 there is no favorable reply, we will
continue the struggle because dignity and reason are on our side.

In an overcrowded hall and with participation of political representatives,
diplomats and activists in solidarity from 18 countries, this initiative
developed very successfully. It was so because of the political sensibility
and artistic value of the works, the youth of the contestants, and proved to
be a new and categorical action of OSPAAAL in support of the freedom of
patriot Oscar López Rivera and the independence of Puerto Rico.
