Smith et. als. in 1909.  Note:  William O.   • Drena Rodrigues I went to the meeting today 10/25 and I must say although the board did not find in our favor to change the zoning, they were very respectful and really listened. The reason they could not find in our favor was because DLNR is the ones who legally make that decision. Almost everyone on the board wanted to rule in our favor but their legal jurisdiction is very limited. But they did offer advice on how to continue and most of them agreed that the University handled things badly. You could see that it was a hard decision for them to make and most of the board said they were not happy with having to make that decision. After their decision they stayed and spoke with us on a personal note.
    Because of the laws, it is really up to DLNR who decide what happens on Mauna Kea. 
    If we wanted Mauna Kea to be in a protected sub zone it has to go through DLNR. Right now Mauna Kea is in a resource sub zone in the conversation district.
    I feel it was zone this way so they could put telescopes up there to begin with. That was decided by DLNR.
    Mauna Kea should have been zoned in the protected sub zone. Just the fact that it is the tallest mountain in the world and hold most of our water and when you throw in the spiritual and cultural aspect into that, it most definitely should have been in the protected sub zone. The Ko’olua Range is in this protected sub zone, why is it that Haleakala and Maunakea is not? I believe it was because the state knew they wanted to put the telescopes up there, and they could not if it was in a protected sub zone.

  • Upai Robinson DLNR is not legal in the hawaiian Kingdom. Exercise your rights. Know your rights. Do not be feel sorry. They want you to bend their way and look you do. Being kind does not mean let them treat you with no respect in our country. No wonder they still here acting as if they still your boss. Answer or shut the case in your favor. DLNR is under the United States of America, whose law is Mauna a Wakea under? Whose land is it on? No wonder US/ CORPORATION/ STATE, inc., in the game!! Find in your favor, not theirs!!
