#LATEST (October 11 at 7 PM): The ongoing state and county law enforcement operation in response to the #ThirtyMeterTelescope conflict on #Maunakea has now top...ped $9.9 million.
The Attorney General’s Office said Friday that its office, #Hawaii National Guard, Department of Public Safety and state Department of Land and Natural Resources have now spent a combined $5.3 million. Those costs went to personnel at the site of the protest and equipment.
Earlier this month, Hawai’i County had put the cost of its response to the protest at $4.4 million. The Maui Police Department has said the cost of overtime for its officers was $68,000, while the Honolulu Police Department said it cost $162,000 to send officers to Hawai’i Island.
A 24/7 protest blockade on Maunakea Access Road — which the state closed on July 15 in an effort to provide safe passage for telescope construction crews — is now in its 89th day, and a resolution is nowhere in sight.
#TMT opponents — who call themselves kia’i (guardians) standing in protection of Maunakea as a sacred Native Hawaiian place — say they’ll stay for as long as it takes and reaffirm that Hawai’i taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for Thirty Meter Telescope security.
Meanwhile, supporters of the Thirty Meter Telescope, say the $2 billion project has gotten all the necessary approvals and construction of the 18-story structure should be allowed to proceed. Among them is Samuel Wilder King II, Executive Director of Imua TMT, who spoke on Hawaii News Now on Thursday. "I think the question should be posed to the protesters. Why aren't they paying for it? I think they are breaking the law. They call it civil disobience I understand that, but there needs to be civil responsibility," King has said about the rising costs.
Governor David Ige has offered no new details on what the government intends to do to end the stalemate. Ige rescinded an Emergency Proclamation for the area in July 30 — the same day he announced the state Department of Land and Natural Resources granted the University of Hawai'i a request to extend TMT's construction permit deadline another two years. The multinational corporation — which has been assured safe passage for its construction crews with state support from National Guard troops, DOCARE officers, and Public Safety sheriff deputies — now has ‪until September 26, 2021‬ to begin building the controversial telescope.

Saiki said the new outbreak of protests has been in the making for decades and that government needs to respond. He said the protests are a sign that Hawaii’s land and cultural management practices need to be reformed for both the public and private sector.
“I’m sure that along the way, especially when the process is protracted, and it’s not easy to navigate, then people do not have the opportunity to voice their concerns, and that is an area that needs to be addressed and improved,” he said.

  • Jessa Lei Reformed to whoms benefit, is the question.
  • Randy Aaron Gonce His other comments in this article are very telling. He is no ally to our plight.

"This is a big concern for the entire state, which is whether the rule of law still applies here,” said Saiki, a Democrat who is also a lawyer. “Assuming that these projects are permitted, then they should advance.”
