We are not Americans! On December 10, 2017, members of Ka ʻAhahui Hawaiʻi Aloha ʻĀina from the Hilo, Waimea, and Ka Lei Maile Aliʻi branches met to discuss preparations for the upcoming strategic planning retreat scheduled for January 13 through 15, 2018, at the Kanaʻina Building, on the grounds of ʻIolani Palace. Part of the discussion was whether or not members felt strongly enough about being ... Hawaiian Kingdom subjects and nationals—as opposed to American citizens—to speak truth to power, even though we are, obviously, caught within an American system that has power over us. Stating our allegiance to our own country can be a risky proposition, especially when the occupying country, with its boot on our neck, is overseen by a leader who is viewed by many as less than competent, racist, somewhat ignorant, abusive, and in favor of tactics of repression. However, love of our own country and of our Queen, as well as our kūpuna aloha ʻāina, calls us to do as much as they did, if not more. At a time when fear and repression ruled during and after the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom government, our kūpuna stood up and resisted. We can do no less. There was no Treaty of Annexation, thus Hawaii was never annexed to the U.S., therefore we continue to be Hawaiian Kingdom subjects as a matter of circumstance and, for many of us, also as a matter of choice. Those Hawaiians who choose to be American citizens at some point in time can go through the process of naturalization in the United States, and this is not the United States. We are Hawaiians. We invite others to join us in acknowledging the truth of our own history, whether popular or not. -- Lynette Cruz of Hui Aloha ‘Āina, Ka Lei Maile Ali’i, O’ahu

Subject: Arizona Can’t Ban Mexican-American Studies Anymore, Judge Says (URL)
Finally... It remains to be seen if the state will appeal. --Alohalani
The permanent injunction follows a two-week bench trial that found Republican-backed ethnic studies restrictions unconstitutional.

A federal judge on Wednesday put the final nail in the coffin of Arizona’s Republican-backed law banning Mexican-American studies classes in Tucson public schools.
The final judgment issued by Senior Judge A. Wallace Tashima after a two-week bench trial last summer caps a seven-year legal battle over conservative attempts to restrict what books could be used or subjects taught in Tucson’s majority-Latino schools.
Tashima’s judgment also sticks the state of Arizona with the bill for the plaintiff’s legal fees. The court has yet to determine the amount
