How is it that an intercontinental ballistic missile defense system could fail due to someone pushing the wrong button and the state of confusion in its implied wisdom is telling us that they fixed the problem? What does that say to the system design that was flawed to begin with least of all the same people are now telling us everyone is fine? WTF Captain Honolulu?
Hereʻs what we know to be true:
A. KEY MISSILE DEFENSE POINTS FOR HAWAII
Distance from North Korea to Hawaii – around 4,500 miles (approximately 20 minutes for a ballistic missile) Shortest distance on a trajectory path for a possible midcourse intercept from Ft. Greely, Alaska – around 2,500 miles.
Shortest distance on a trajectory path for a possible midcourse intercept from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California – around 3,100 miles.
After final separation of a long-range missile, a debris cloud of hundreds of objects in space including the warhead forms and expands up to a couple of miles as the warhead moves towards its target.
Long-range discrimination sensors from Hawaii need to be able to discriminate the warhead from the debris to increase probability of an intercept.
B. CURRENT U.S. OPERATIONAL CAPABILITY TO DEFEND HAWAII FROM NORTH KOREA
EARLY-WARNING CAPABILITIES
o DSP early-warning satellites
o SBIRS satellites
o AN/TPY-2 radar in Japan in forward-based mode
o U.S., Japanese, and Korean Aegis BMD vessels equipped with SPY-1 radar
Tracking Capabilities
o Sea-Based X-Band (SBX) discrimination radar based in Hawaii needs to be in the mid-Pacific — underneath/or close to the intercept point -- to increase reliability and confidence in shooting down-long range ballistic missiles Intercept Capabilities
o 37 GBIs currently fielded; 44 GBIs by the end of 2017 to defend the U.S. homeland and Hawaii from North Korean long-range ballistic missiles
o Multiple shots from interceptors are required to defeat one North Korean long-range missile
o Only one shot opportunity to defend Hawaii because distances are too far to allow for second or third shot opportunities from the 37 GBIs based in California and Alaska Command and Control
o Air Operation Center and the Pacific Integrated Center for Integrated Air and Missile Defense for the battle management of the Pacific is located at Hickam Air Base at Pearl Harbor
o NORTHCOM and C2BMC (Command and Control, Battle Management and Communications) at Schriever Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado are responsible for command and control in defense of Hawaii
If this is the scenario just speaking to N. Korea what happens if the attack comes from another country? And, if all of these variables have been quantified by some high tech algorithm how is it that some one could push the wrong button and send a false alarm? So what does that say about Gov Igeʻs excuse and promise to fix the screwup or was it a screw up at all? Was a missile launched and no one is sayings shit about it? And seriously, is Gov Ige even believable with his promise to mitigate a nuclear attack when canʻt even fix the homeless situation and runaway rouge inflation here in Hawaii?
Whatʻs even more comical is that there are now aggressive politicians who are “Looking into it” to determine what? Will they discover how much they donʻt know or simply bite into a bribe supporting more lies ? Does government really believe the people are buying their bullshit? I think not !
Why is Hawaii even an issue in this possible global nuclear threat. Na Kanaka need to be more proactive and less reactive to the politics of Hawaii. I didnʻt get to hear Gov Waiheeʻs comments at the Iʻolani Palace yesterday but Iʻd be interested to learn his thoughts on this issue and how na kanaka could participate in a significant conversation leading to more of a predictable positive outcome.
