this issue is bigger then most people think, homelessness isn't just on the rise in hawaii its a epidemic worldwide. Its not just about who's right and who's wrong its about education, understanding and most of all love for our fellow man.
+Natural Man yes and because of their greed once again were going to have a housing bust.They put20plud people in these homes but if they lived like normal people they could not afford these neighborhoods.They use to enforce housing codes.no more than5people living in a three bdr house.It's very sad they have torn decent neighborhoods up.All in the name of greed.They need to go back to300and400$a month rent so people can live like decent folk.not like animals.no reason for a single Americans to be living on the streets.
Millions of people with high paying jobs do drugs. Meth and opioids/opiates if affecting people in all economic strata. The income inequality in the US is a gaping hole swallowing fellow Americans. Not so Europeans who pay high taxes so that they all live decent lives. Greedy America.
Society needs to fix this problem. This is a failure of the current economic system. Nobody wants bums sleeping everywhere, urinating, and crapping everywhere. I wouldn't want them in my neighborhood.
Some people here like to elevate their own esteem by riding to the rescue (verbally) of the poor souls. This is a mental health problem and a systemic economic problem. How many of you have taken one of these indigents into your homes and really helped them? Allowing them to sleep and tent all over the streets, urinate and crap everywhere will only invite more and more of this behavior. Move to a third world country if you want to live with this routinely. It's there all over and the US is heading that direction too. It's called poverty, and squalor.
Save some money when times are good! People waste money in so many ways, some self destructive: cigarettes, booze, drugs, gambling, on and on. They must develop some self discipline with money and other things to enjoy a good life.
That's human nature though. We're supposed to look down on people that don't seem worthy to us. Don't tell me YOU have never looked down on someone even ONCE before. I look down on people who are stupid enough get a DUI. I look down on people who choose to have 50 kids with nothing but a welfare check. I look down on people who can't graduate Highschool. You get the idea. And to the guy above me, LOLOLOL give me a fuckin break and don't give me that "OH THEY FAIL TO REALIZE THAT THERE ARE FACTORS THAT WE CANNOT CONTROL BLA BLA BLA". Tons of people with disabilities like autism and ADHD (stuff they can't control) get made fun of, get discriminated against when looking for jobs, and get rejected when they look for a relationship but you know what? It's the same exact thing: human nature so just suck it up and move the fuck on.

the indigenous population wouldn't be homeless if it wasn't for rich a$$holes building hotels and causing properties to go up in price. very sad problem that's happening worldwide. there are so many vacant houses everywhere in this world but yet there's no place for people without home. and those rotten individuals who are patrolling "their" neighbourhood and talking about not wanting homeless around - disgusting assholes! shame on them for thinking that poor people aren't equal to them! people are the most horrible creatures on this planet!

Capitalism is failing. Companies that are unwilling to pay a living wage have replaced all locally run businesses. It's very sad to observe the crisis unfolding in California where I live. So much luxury housing is empty while affordable housing is inaccessible to a huge portion of workers, elderly, disabled, and children. Not everyone can work. Any smart society plans for at least 10% of the population to rely on social welfare services for survival. Too many Americans are still under the delusional that the free market will work it out. The free market is only benefiting the 1%. I hope more Americans wake up soon.

I'm all for helping, but if you're gonna stand on the street and take a dump where people are trying to walk and go about their business I don't feel too bad for you. My idea, find an abandoned building round up the homeless and have them work to repair it and make it livable . They will gain job experience and feel good about hard work. Then send them to thrift shops wth vouchers to help get them clothes and decorations/furniture for their new home. Get a garden going outside and train them how to keep it so there is food available. Make sure they are filling out job apps each day.
Yeah while we do need mental institutions for mental ill people who can't take care of themselves but the real reason the government shut down all institutions was to cover up the experiments the CIA and some really bad doctors had going on on mentally ill people in them. Most records were destroyed but not all.

Take in some indigents in, over at your place Duke. There's a good chance they are criminals, druggies, drunks, mentally ill, or shifty people you can't trust. The Smart family tried to help a homeless guy in Utah. Had him over to their house to do some work. He ended up kidnapping and raping Elizabeth Smart for a year or more.
