On Tuesday, A&B is going to present their “diversified agriculture” plan to the policy committee. And by diversified ag., I mean their plan to hoard agricultural land, and water that belongs to kuleana farmers, all to grow stuff that we can’t eat.
Here’s the thing: The whole point of making agriculture a decent part of your economy is to feed your people and to provide jobs. A&B will do neither, with a large portion of our agricultural resources.
Let me explain: Last week, the Maui Chamber of Commerce and the Farm Bureau hosted an event at the old HC&S office where A&B’s head of diversified ag. showed us their plan for the central valley. We got on buses and rode out to the old cane fields on the West side of the Mokulele Highway. There, he proudly showed us their corn fields, harvesting combines and an app on his IPad that helps him control everything. The whole experience was frightening. This is what I learned:
✔️A&B’s “diversified ag” guy is straight out of the midwest. He was an agronomist in Nebraska and Iowa (🌽Corn Country🌽), and when I asked him about growing food, he said that he’d leave that to local farmers who know more about that.
✔️Their latest harvest is 140 acres of corn, 75% GMO and 25% conventional. The 25% conventional is for a specific customer. The other 75% is BT corn, and they are looking for a buyer. It can be used for silage feed for animals or bio energy. They will rotate the corn crop with soybean and sorghum, which are also predominantly GMO. I asked him why they would base their ag operations on a crop that voters decided they didn’t want in Maui. He replied “because it’s cheaper to grow.”
✔️They don’t plan on shipping any of their harvest out of Hawaii, because shipping costs will make it too expensive. They are going to ship their first harvest to Big Island Dairy for free so they can see if they like it. They also plan to work with local ranchers to see if they will use it for feed. (Translation: they are pushing to turn our beloved Hawaii cattle and dairy operations into corn based production models. The same industrial corn-based model that hurt small farmers all over the U.S. and turned our agricultural economy into one based almost solely on commodity corn prices. Cows aren't even built to digest corn, they're supposed to eat grass. Cows raised on corn require more antibiotics, have higher mortality rates, and would ruin our proudly locally grown, traditionally grass fed beef.)
💦💧Water use: Annual water consumption is expected to be about the same as sugar. Sugar is a water intensive 2-year crop. They will grow 3-4 crops of corn per year, so even though the per-crop water use for corn is less, the annual water consumption will stay the same. (Translation: A&B will continue stealing and hoarding water)
✔️Jobs: Sugar is a labor intensive crop. For example, it would take about 5 people 8 hours to plant 80 acres of sugar. With corn, one person could plant 200 acres of corn in the same amount of time, so that’s going to keep labor costs down. (Translation: there are ZERO job opportunities here)
✔️When I asked him “What’s so “diverse” about this?” and “ What about FOOD?” He told me that it’s up to the County to deal with the 869 acres of A&B land that is being negotiated for the Kula Ag Park expansion. (Translation: A&B are NOT FARMERS. They are a REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT CORPORATION who leases to farmers, and grows commodity corn on the side, in order to continue land and water banking for their future real estate endeavors.) 💲💲This is further supported by the fact that A&B converted to a Real Estate Investment Trust and hired James Mead, an experienced REIT executive as their CFO.💲💲
✔️The sections on their map that say things like “beverage crops” and “orchards” will be contracted out to people like Ka’anapali Coffee, etc.
What can we do?
✊Spread the word. All of this is still in the research and development phase. A&B doesn’t have a market for their GMO corn yet. They can only have a successful GMO corn and soy operation if they can find local buyers for their harvest. Our local dairies and cattle ranchers need to know that if their operations are based on GMO corn fed cattle, we’re not buying it.
✊Show up to the Policy, Economic Development, and Agriculture Committee on Tuesday September 5th at 9:00 am and tell the committee, and A&B that the community will aggressively pressure A&B and its stockholders to change course. We will stop at nothing to drag them and their reputation through the mud until their reputation, and their stocks, take a plunge. National and international media has supported Maui and our campaign to drive GMO based agriculture out of Maui County, and we will continue to push until media and tourists worldwide know what is happening here. First Monsanto, now A&B. We will not allow our home to become an even bigger center for GMO crops. ENOUGH.
